The Early French Songs by Fanny Hensel (née Mendelssohn) were published in November 2008 by ARS (Distribution Note 1) order number ARS 38472.

Between 1820 and 1822, the young Fanny Mendelssohn composed a total of 18 French songs in dense chronological order, and it was logical to combine them into a cycle entitled “Frühe Französische Lieder”. The lyrics of a total of 13 songs were written by Jean Pierre Claris de Florian. He has used them as song scenes in his novellas and novels. Fanny Hensel did not transform poems into songs, but took lyrics directly from a novel.
The Romance de Galatée is documented to have been performed by Fanny Hensel herself and her sister Rebecka, and her father described it as his favourite song. Some songs were partly incomplete or already planned for revision at the time they were written, but this never happened. Again other songs got a second version, which carry the note “after Herr Professor Zelters Korrektur”. The composer had reworked a total of six songs in 1839 by means of a fair copy for printing – but these were not printed.
After 180 years the “Frühen Französischen Lieder” now see the light of a broad public with this recording on CD. In de Florian’s novels, song singers often accompany each other with string instruments such as theorbo and guitar. In addition, it was very common in the Romantic period for accompanying parts to be performed with guitar.
