Compared to the music of other European countries, the music of the Iberian Peninsula has a multitude of individual characteristics and historical uniqueness. To determine these, to trace their origin, to follow their development and to prove their importance especially for the development of modernity in the first half of the 20th century is an important research objective of this investigation. In numerous analyses this is proven in the guitaristic repertoire and the directly connected contexts in compositional practice. An extensive chapter of analysis explores how composers use musical elements of different origins and epochs in their works. For some musical elements a reference to the time of Al-Andalus with the Arabic, Christian and Jewish traditions rooted there could be proven before, or they were identified as a component of the folk tradition or the Flamenco. Through their combination with established modern methods, the composers shaped an individual national musical style within European modernism.
